When I first heard of Curtain it was part of the line- up for last year’s Film. Fright. Fest in London and due to both the extensive line- up and lack of information about Curtain, I missed out until now. Ever since the shower scene in Psycho, shower curtains have been a symbol of fear and the unknown, shielding us from the death that looms just out of view. Curtain takes this symbol and makes it the centre of a whole film. A fantastical film set in mundane settings. It starts off with something that the majority of us have in our homes and transforms it into something dark and foreboding. Throughout the film I couldn’t help but feel a kinship between Curtain and the work of H. P. The share many themes, madness, inter- dimensional creatures, and strange cults. A Mumblecore Lovecraft story. While Lovecraft’s protagonists in stories such as The Rats in the Walls and The Shadow Over Innsmouth were Gothic and dramatic, Curtain’s protagonists, Danni and Tim are much more grounded. They’re awkward and complex. The actors do a great job of being believable, especially when the bizarreness of the plot sometimes risks making the whole film absurd. The absurdity is kept at bay for the majority of the film by the mystery. You can laugh off something weird and unexplained. A shower curtain being sucked into a wall isn’t necessarily a sign of evil. Much like in Poltergeist and the spirits pushing Carol Anne across the kitchen floor, it’s all about the reaction. Danni’s initial reaction is fear, she thinks about leaving immediately. It’s Tim’s reaction, the intrigue that leads Danni, and the audience, down this rabbit hole. It’s the strength of the actors, Danni and Tim (the film makers used the actors actual names) and it’s more impressive considering both have no other IMDB film credits. It’s a very strong film, and due to it’s strange subject matter, very unique. There are some weaknesses, the creature effects later in the film are a bit rubbery. This is compensated for with the camera work which makes sure that the camera doesn’t linger too long on some of the less impressive monster features. Other than that the only objectionable part of the film is an unnecessary jump scare, it’s the only jump scare in the film and it kind of detracts from the tone. This is a film about the weird and unknown, it’s strength are in the potential frights that hide behind the curtain. It doesn’t need cheap jump scares. Horror Bathroom Decor: Gruesome or Awesome?
